Principle
Botulinum toxin injections (commonly known by brand names such as Botox) are used in aesthetic medicine to temporarily soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement, such as frown lines between the brows, forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. A very small, targeted dose is injected directly into the muscle using a fine needle. The toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signals that cause the muscle to contract, allowing the overlying skin to relax and appear smoother.
Results
Results typically begin to appear within 3 to 7 days, with the full effect visible after around two weeks. The softened appearance generally lasts between 3 and 6 months, depending on the individual and the area treated, after which the treatment can be repeated to maintain results.
Possible side effects
Mild redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site is common and usually settles within a few days. Less commonly, a temporary headache or slight, short-lived asymmetry in facial expression may occur.
Number of sessions
A single session is usually enough to achieve visible results. Follow-up sessions every 3 to 6 months are recommended to maintain the effect over time.
